Summary Report - Scott Pet's Evaluation Studies

Pork Skin Products VS Beef Rawhide Products
Great Lakes Nutrition, Inc. (GLN) conducts product studies for Scott Pet, Inc. (Scott Pet).

GLN is a privately owned and operated pet product evaluation and consulting service. The studies involve a variety of pure dog breeds, from toys to giant sizes, and a wide range of ages.

GLN maintains the canines in accordance with established standard operating procedures, which comply with the Animal Welfare Act, recommended guidelines from the Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources, National Research Council and the Program of Veterinary Care, established and supervised by the attending veterinarian and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. The GLN consulting animal nutritionist is Melissa S. Maitland, Ph.D.

GLN began studies for Scott Pet in August of 2002 comparing the Beef Rawhide Knotted Bone product and Scott Pet's Pork Skin Knotted Bone product. The studies included preference tests, digestibility, and consumption rates.

After extensive evaluations, the following conclusions have been determined:

  • Pork Skin products are preferred by dogs 9 to 1 over Beef Rawhide.

Pork Chomps Preferred

  • No problems with digestion or stool are reported with the Pork Skin product.
  • Pork Skin products are more readily consumed. The average consumption time for Pork Skin is 8.4 hours, where as the average consumption time for Beef Rawhide is over 73 hours!

  • The Pork Skin products are irradiated, thus producing a final product totally safe for animals to consume and people to handle. There are no bacteria count measured from Pork Skin products.

The extensive field-testing and evaluations of the Pork Skin Knotted Bone shows its superiority with significant differences over the Beef Rawhide Knotted Bone product. The superiority is consistent over significant time.
